Tee It Up Between The Hedges

Georgia begins its 132nd season of football with Kirby Smart starting his eighth year at the helm. Smart’s Bulldogs are 81-15 during this time with national championships in 2021 and 2022. The Bulldogs rank ninth all-time in victories with 868.

Due to the cancelation of a previously scheduled matchup at Oklahoma (who now will join the SEC in 2024), Georgia plays host to four consecutive games to start the campaign and seven total in 2023. The last time the Bulldogs played four straight contests in Sanford Stadium was in 2004, topping Marshall, LSU and Vanderbilt before falling to Tennessee in those showdowns.

The last schedule that featured four home games to start a season was in 1999. That year, the Bulldogs went 4-0, beating Utah State, USC, UCF and LSU.

Two of Georgia’s first non-conference opponents, UT Martin and Ball State, the Bulldogs have never faced. Georgia has played UAB twice, winning both, including a 56-7 rout in 2021.

Georgia’s final home game is versus Ole Miss. The Rebels will be the Western Division crossover and will be making their first trip to Athens since 2012. The Bulldogs ran away with that contest, 37- 10. The most recent meeting with the Rebels came in 2016 in Oxford where Ole Miss claimed a victory.

UGA Football: Smart, Logue, and Bullard Talk Prep for UT Martin

ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, senior defensive lineman Zion Logue, and junior defensive back Javon Bullard spoke with the media Tuesday evening after practice and offered the following comments.

Head Coach Kirby Smart

Coach Smart’s Condolences to the Seiler Family…
“I would like to send our condolences to the Seiler Family. One of the first people I met when I got here in school was Sonny Seiler and his family. Obviously, the obvious meaning that they’ve had to the University of Georgia and to the UGA Dawg Nation family, they’ve been incredible so we’re all mourning the loss of him. My thoughts are with his family during this tough time.”

On what he looks to evaluate in game one…
“I think, procedurally, you haven’t had the play clock permanently on. We have it at practice, but it’s not the same. The first game is no different than the last game in terms of things that will get you beat, but I do think first game jitters exist. You want the players to be able to get comfortable, go out and cut loose and play, and get the anxiety out of the way, get the first hit out of the way. I want to play our brand of football and play really disciplined, not have a lot of penalties and a lot of sloppy mistakes. Communication things, things where you just beat yourself, we’re trying to avoid.”

UGA Football: Bulldogs Set To Unveil Sanford Stadium South Side Improvements Saturday

ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia Athletic Association reminds football fans about the improvements that have been made to Sanford Stadium’s South side in anticipation for this Saturday’s opener, including the ticketed area on the Gillis bridge.

In order for the new gates to be installed weekly, the bridge will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday and will reopen following each game.

The Bulldogs’ home facility has been undergoing a two-phase $68.5 million improvement.  The completion of phase one will be unveiled when Georgia plays host to UT Martin.  Phase two is on pace to be completed prior to the 2024 season.
