UGA Football: Georgia vs Tennessee Post Game Notes

Defense Pitches Another Second Half Shutout:
Third-ranked Georgia shut down UT in the second half for the second straight year, allowing no points and only 71 yards on 39 plays plus the Bulldogs had a defensive score of their own in a 44-21 victory to snap UT’s eight-game winning streak. Thanks to five Bulldog sacks, UT finished with minus one rushing yard, tallying 214 yards of total offense. Last year, Georgia held Texas A&M to minus two yards rushing in a 19-13 victory here. Georgia came in ranked fourth nationally in Scoring Defense and third nationally in Rushing Defense. Last season, Georgia led UT 26-14 at the half, pitched a shutout with a defensive score, and won 43-14.

In the first half today, Georgia surrendered 21 points to No. 14 UT, however one score came by the Vols defense and another was a one-play drive (36-yard TD pass) as Georgia trailed 21-17. In the first half, UT had 143 yards (19-rush, 124-pass) of total offense on 24 plays with eight first downs. After a failed fourth down attempt by the Bulldogs in the 2nd quarter, UT took over at the UGA 36 and threw a game-tying TD pass to Palmer with 6:40 left.

UGA Football: Frierson Chats With Mark Webb

Mark Webb always has something interesting to say. The Georgia defensive back is among the most chatty players on the team, and he’s been that way throughout his Bulldog career. His teammates frequently mention him, along with Richard LeCounte, when asked about the funniest guys on the squad.

Webb, a senior from Philadelphia, spent the previous three seasons playing alongside his cousin, running back D’Andre Swift, who is now in the NFL. While Swift is a rookie with the Detroit Lions, Webb is still a Bulldog and still making plays, like his first career interception last Saturday in Georgia’s win over Auburn.

During a Quick Chat after practice Tuesday, Webb talked about his first pick, what he did during quarantine, growing up in Philadelphia, and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say:

Frierson: What was it like to be back playing a game in Sanford Stadium on Saturday?

Webb: It was amazing, the atmosphere was definitely amazing. Even though we can’t have all the fans in the stadium, it was definitely amazing to be back between the hedges. Just running out on the field, that never gets old.

Frierson: How good did it feel to get that first interception?

Webb: That felt great. I’ve been waiting for it, asking God for it, and just for it to finally come when my mom and dad were in the stands, it doesn’t get any better than that. I couldn’t ask for much more, I was definitely thankful for it.

Frierson: How did you spend your free time over the shutdown this spring and summer?

UGA Football: Smart, Players Offer Post-Practice Comments

Below are post-practice comments from head coach Kirby Smart and players Mark Webb and Nakobe Dean (Tuesday, Oct. 6).

Head Coach Kirby Smart (Full transcript)
On what he sees from Tennessee’s offensive line…
“[Tennessee[ has great size. They’re very experienced in our league, one kid who has played a lot of ball last year against us and has gotten better. They’ve got a tremendous offensive line, probably one of the best in our league. [Tennessee], us— I like our offensive line— I know Alabama has a really good one, and there are several others, but these guys are talented. Cade [Mays] has played in our league at the tackle position. He’s proven he can block the best guys in the country. They’ll be a great challenge.”

On the defense complementing each other this season in terms of the pass-rush creating opportunities…
“I think that’s always the case— you want to compliment each other, and they’ve done a tremendous job of doing that. They’ve got a lot of experience, but they probably haven’t been challenged like they’re going to be challenged this week.”

On an injury update of Tre’ McKitty
“I’m hopeful that Tre’ is going to be able to go. He practiced today and did a good job. We thought he was going to be ready for last week and didn’t want to have to play him unless we had to.”

On his assessment of Darnell Washington
“Darnell has done a good job. He’s been kind of thrown in the fire. I wish his conditioning was at a higher level. I wish he could sustain his high speed longer. He gets tired pretty quickly, but he is physical. He’s not afraid of contact, and he’s got great hands.”
