On Saturday, Georgia will make its fourth appearance of the season on the SEC Network, including its second straight. The Bulldogs topped Arkansas and Kentucky on the road earlier this season and beat Mississippi State last Saturday on the network.
The Bulldogs lead the series with South Carolina 51-19-2, and they have won four out of the last five in the series that dates back to 1894. However, the Gamecocks delivered Georgia its first loss in 2019 (20-17 2OT). Since becoming SEC Eastern Division rivals in 1992, the Bulldogs own an 18-10 lead in the series. Georgia has won the past two meetings in Williams-Brice Stadium, and the Bulldogs are 3-1 overall against the Gamecocks in the Kirby Smart era.

ATHENS, Ga. – The 13th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs defeated Mississippi State Saturday night 31-24 under the lights of Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium in front of a crowd of 20,524 and a nationally-televised audience on SEC Network.
In his Georgia debut, redshirt-sophomore quarterback JT Daniels completed 28-of-38 passes for a career-best 401 yards. Daniels became the first Georgia quarterback to pass for 400 yards since Aaron Murray against Auburn in 2013. Daniels is the seventh Bulldog to throw for at least 400 yards in a game.
UGA Football: A Debut to Remember

One month and 11 days ago, the Georgia football team walked off of Dooley Field and into its locker room after a 44-21 whipping of Tennessee. On Georgia’s giant video board at Sanford Stadium on Saturday night, about 15 minutes before Jake Camarda crushed the opening kickoff, were two words that resonated: Welcome Back!
And welcome aboard to JT Daniels, who put on a spectacular show in the 13th-ranked Bulldogs’ 31-24 win over Mississippi State. Daniels became the third quarterback to start a game for Georgia this season, taking over for Stetson Bennett and D’Wan Mathis. After throwing for 401 yards and four touchdowns, his first snaps in a Georgia uniform couldn’t have gone much better.
“It feels really good,” Daniels said.
A lot has happened between that Oct. 10 romp over the Vols and Saturday night’s return, against Mississippi State. There have been a pair of losses to very tough, top-10 teams, at Alabama and against Florida in Jacksonville — losses that took the Bulldogs’ SEC East fate out of their hands for the first time in several years and losses that were impacted by inconsistent quarterback play. There also was a grind-it-out 14-3 win at Kentucky on Halloween, and last week there was the postponement of Georgia’s trip to Missouri because the Tigers were having coronavirus issues.
UGA Football: Georgia Football Postgame Notes vs. Mississippi State
Daniels Makes Bulldog Debut: In his first action for Georgia, redshirt sophomore transfer JT Daniels (28-for-38, 401 yards, 4 TDs) set a career high for passing yards and TD passes. His previous best was 349 yards versus Notre Dame in 2018 and he had three TD passes twice before while at USC. Daniels became the first Bulldog QB to throw for more than 400 yards in a game since Aaron Murray in 2013 against Auburn when he went for 415. Daniels is the seventh Bulldog to throw for at least 400 yards in a game. He became the third different Bulldog to start at quarterback this year. The Bulldogs finished with 409 yards of total offense.
Down 3-0 in the first, he led an 11 play, 69-yard TD drive in 5:14. It was his 16th career TD pass and first as a Bulldog, connecting with George Pickens for four yards. Also, he had a 49-yarder to freshman Jermaine Burton. Down 17-10, he directed a 70-yard TD drive on seven plays, culminated when he connected with Burton on 3rd-and-7 for an 18-yard TD with 30 seconds left in the first half. To open the second half, Daniel and Burton connected on a 48-yard TD to finish a 75-yard drive on eight plays to go up 24-17. On a 3rd-and 20, he found Kearis Jackson for a 40-yard TD to put Georgia up 31-24. It completed a 9 play, 72-yard drive.
The 2006 season marked the last time Georgia started three different QBs in a season in Joe Tereshinski III, Matthew Stafford and Joe Cox. That year, the Bulldogs went 9-4 capped by a victory over Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

UGA Football: Smart, Bulldogs Preview Mississippi State Game
University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart and several student-athletes offered the following comments on Monday.
Head Coach Kirby Smart
Opening statement …
“I will open with we moved on last week and began to prep and work for our future opponents starting last week. We found out our game was postponed with Missouri and got kind of a jump start this weekend on Mississippi State in terms of preparing for them. We had actually looked at them a little bit the first off week. Coach [Mike] Leach has a very different style of offense than what we typically see week to week in the SEC — a lot of the same concepts, but different ways of going about it. It’s kind of a different type of defending to defend these guys, so we’ve got a lot of elements to our defense that we have to keep consistent and then other elements that you have to change. Then, defensively, they’ve got a really aggressive, big front — physical style of defense in terms of getting prepared for that. Those are the challenges for us right now, and we are focused on Mississippi State.”
On handling COVID-19 postponements …
“Usually, you have a good indication when there is a possibility of cancellation in terms of a team is in a threshold, like last week. We knew that Missouri was teetering on the brink. Each test they got back was going to be crucial to whether or not they could make the numbers. So, you usually know when that could happen, but you have to prepare each practice as if you are playing the game. We certainly are confident that we are going to be able to play Mississippi State. We feel good about where we are. We feel good about where they are. That’s communicated, so we feel good about playing.”
On testing quarterback JT Daniels in a game situation …
“You just try to make the best situation you can to give your team an opportunity to win. That’s what we try to do in all our decisions, regardless of quarterback or not. You know, the running backs don’t get tackled in practice either. They get hit, but they don’t get tackled, so you have to put the best guys out there that give you the best opportunity to win. That’s what we have always done.”
On Stetson Bennett’s progress with his injury and if he can reveal who the starter will be …
“Stetson is bouncing back. He is still dinged up a little bit. He was out there at practice each day doing all he could. He has still been limited a little bit, but we haven’t done anything since Thursday. In terms of Friday, Saturday, Sunday treatment and recovery, getting himself back in a position that he can play and compete at a high level — that’s the hope for this week is for him to do the same. I don’t know exactly where he is until after practice today.”
