UGA Football: Bulldogs Address Media Following Wednesday Practice

Georgia players Kearis Jackson and Warren Ericson spoke with media Wednesday afternoon. They offered the following comments.

#10 Kearis Jackson | Redshirt Sophomore | WR
On how he feels going into camp…
“So far I know coming into camp, I was dealing with a few injuries and stuff but now I’m healthy, I’m 100 percent. My main goal coming into camp was to be a leader and just pull guys with me along because I know myself, and I know how it feels to be brought down. I want guys to be able to come in and work hard, play hard and play fast. This fall so far we’ve been doing that on offense and everything has gone pretty smooth.”

On how learning the offense has gone over zoom…
“Well we started the zoom meetings in like February or January, I can’t remember, but I must say the offense, the receivers, the quarterbacks, running backs and linemen have all done a great job up to this point learning the offense. Guys are now playing fast, we have guys in the right positions to make place and Coach Monken, I love the way he’s bringing in the offense. He loves to see guys make plays and if you can make plays you can play for him. So far the whole offense has done a great job. It’s day three of practice and we’ve been doing a great job, especially with the volume of new offense we have that’s new to us. We’ve taken it pretty well by coming in and wanting to learn and wanting to get better. We’ve faced a little adversity by missing spring but now since we have it in front of us, it’s go time. It hasn’t been too much of a situation that’s become a big deal. Like I said though, we’ve done a great job in fall camp.”

On what he thinks it will be like playing in a stadium with limited capacity…
“We have to control what we can control. We have to bring our own energy. I know the stadium won’t be as full but, like I said, we have to bring our own energy. The fans aren’t there, like at practice, so we have to bring our own energy. On gameday, there won’t be any fans there, but we’re there. We’re focused on the game and yes we love the fans but we have to control what we can control.”

#50 Warren Ericson | Redshirt Sophomore | OL
On what it is like having a new quarterback voice in the huddle…
“We have a lot of talent. All of our quarterbacks are great leaders and they’re all stepping up to the plate. Each person is different and it doesn’t take too much adjustment. We just have to do what we do as an offensive line and just keep them off their backs.”

On what he took away from his opportunity to compete in the Sugar Bowl to bring into this upcoming season…
“I honestly took it as a learning experience. It was a great opportunity and I loved every single second of it. It was definitely a learning experience. Some say I played well and I thank them for that, but I want to focus on the things I did not do well and I want to improve on those. Hopefully the things that I can improve on can be translated to this upcoming season. I want to play fast and I want to continue to just get my fits right. Playing low, leverage, getting my feet right. I just want to get my technique as crisp as possible.”

On if anything changes for the offensive line when a new offensive coordinator comes in…
“I wouldn’t say that it’s too much different for me. Football is football in my view. As far as pass blocking and the techniques, we’ve been able to adjust to them and his offense and he’s done a great job of coming in and teaching his offense and getting in our brains. We just have to go out there and execute.”

UGA Football: Greg McGarity and Josh Brooks on Stadium Capacity, Ticket Distribution for Fall 2020

The following are supplemental comments from J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity and senior deputy athletic director Josh Brooks as follow up to stadium capacity and ticket distribution.

On whether the decision to allow tailgating has been decided/if not, when the public can expect that decision…
“Well, we outline in our note to our donors that we’ll make that decision a little bit later. I know Alabama has already come out and said no tailgating— Arkansas has, as well— but we’re going to wait and see. We don’t have to make that decision right now but certainly as we near the first game, we’ll make those decisions about tailgating. We will just wait and make that decision a little bit later.”

On what the status is of the Dawg Walk and whether that will take place…
“We don’t know yet. To practice social distancing, that’s not really conducive to the Dawg Walk, as we know it today. It’s really the only way our team can get into the stadium now, so I’m sure that will be modified in some degree. We just haven’t zeroed in on those plans for when we start in October.”

UGA Football: Frierson Chats With Nakobe Dean

By John Frierson
UGA Staff Writer

Nakobe Dean loved playing football, basketball and baseball growing up. The ultra-athletic Georgia football sophomore first dunked a basketball the summer before he started eighth grade.

A 6-foot and 220-pound linebacker from Horn Lake, Miss., just south of Memphis, Dean had a very good freshman season on the Bulldog defense, playing in all 14 games and finishing with 25 tackles.

During a Quick Chat after practice Tuesday, the Bulldogs’ second of preseason camp, Dean talked about what he’s been doing the past few months, what he could eat every day, dunking at a young age and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say:

Frierson: How close to normal do things feel these days now that everyone is back together and you’re practicing football again?

Dean: As far as camp, yeah, we’re all in our little bubble and doing everything that we usually do. We don’t usually get out during camp and I know that when we do get out, it’s going to be a little different.

Frierson: Obviously it was a very unusual spring and summer because of the coronavirus pandemic, so how did you use all of the time that you had? Did you do anything interesting or fun?

UGA Football: Players Speak with Media Following Tuesday Fall Practice

Georgia players Azeez Ojulari and Nakobe Dean spoke with media Tuesday afternoon. They offered the following comments.

#13 Azeez Ojulari | Redshirt Sophomore | OLB

On who has taken the responsibility of keeping the team accountable to properly social distance…
“Yeah, definitely the leadership group has been preaching to the team to make sure they are wearing their mask at all times, in the building and everywhere you go—just keep that mask on for your protection—not just for you but the people around you. So, it’s been a big deal around here.”
On having the opportunity to have a more SEC opponents this season with the 10-game, conference only play…
“The SEC is a competition every week, definitely. That will be great for us—going to battle every week no matter what team it is. It is going to be a battle for sure. We have to bring our ‘A’ game every week.”
On what people should expect from a Todd Monken-style offense…
“Man, that offense is going to be good, man! We should come here working hard every day—we are following the coaches’ lead and doing whatever the coaches want us to do. So, they are going to go out there and execute and do what they have to do.”
#17 Nakobe Dean | Sophomore | LB
On how good it feels to go into fall camp this season at 100% after suffering an ankle sprain going into last season’s…
“It feels great. I’m definitely way further ahead. After going through last season, getting a whole year behind me, I think I have really learned the playbook and everything like that. It’s a great feeling.”
On his thoughts about the order of opponents Georgia will face this season/whether that changes how Georgia prepares…
“I’m grateful to be playing all the teams we are playing, but our focus is on us right now. No matter what the order of the games are, we’re going to prepare the same each week. As a team, we will practice hard. That’s what we do.”
On his responsibilities as inside linebacker and whether he feels comfortable taking those on/being the guy who calls the defense…
“I for sure feel comfortable— you’ve got to be comfortable. If you’re not and can’t be, [the coaches] will find someone who can. You have to be comfortable in telling everybody what to do. You’ve got to be able to be there vocally on defense.”
On the students returning to campus/if he has any anxiety about that and the effects others could have on the season regarding COVID-19 concerns
“There are definitely concerns, just like there have been with everyone else returning to campus. I just want to challenge the student body and challenge my peers to wear their face mask, just like we all will be wearing ours in class and everything like that.”

UGA Football: Breaking Down the 2020 Schedule for the Dawgs

ATHENS —— Georgia will face three teams ranked in the Coaches’ Pre-Season Top 25 poll in its revised 2020 football schedule, according to an announcement Monday evening by the Southeastern Conference.

The Bulldogs will play Oct. 17 at #3 Alabama, Nov. 7 against Florida in Jacksonville and Oct. 3 at home against #11 Auburn.  The latter game is one of just four home contests for Georgia, the fewest in Athens since a 3-year stretch from 1965-67, when the college football season consisted of a 10-game regular season.  Additionally, every SEC game in the previously announced schedule for Georgia has found a new date.  That includes the annual clash with Florida in Jacksonville, which for the first time since 1991 will not be played on its traditional weekend of late October/early November.

A breakdown of the schedule follows:
Sept. 26 at Arkansas:  As announced earlier Monday by the SEC, the Bulldogs will travel to Arkansas for their season opener on Sept. 26.  Georgia leads the all-time series with Arkansas by a 10-4 margin.  The two programs last met six years ago, when the Bulldogs prevailed 45-32 in Little Rock on Oct. 18, 2014.  Their last meeting in Fayetteville occurred in the 2009 season, when Georgia won 52-41.  The 2020 game will mark the Division I head coaching debut of Arkansas’ Sam Pittman, who spent the previous four seasons at Georgia, the first three as the offensive line coach and the final year as Associate Head Coach in charge of the offensive line.

UGA Football: Smart, Bulldogs Preview Fall Practice

ATHENS, Ga. —  University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart, along with several student-athletes, previewed fall camp Sunday afternoon. They offered the following comments.

Head coach Kirby Smart

Opening comments …

“Welcome back. It is good to see everybody. I know we are super excited to be back and be here working at the office. What a crazy time it has been the last five months. First, I want to tell our administration here how much they have supported us, how much they have meant to us, how much they have meant to the players. President [Jere W.] Morehead, Greg McGarity — Ron Courson and his staff have been incredible. I have never spent as much time with a staff as I have Ron. We have almost moved in together between the number of meetings we have had together down in his office and also up in my office. We have spent a lot of time together, and I feel very blessed to have someone like Ron that the players trust, the parents trust — they have an open line of communication. It just goes to show you how important it is to have a good athletic trainer who is present during recruiting, because a lot of the relationships that are developed with our players starts with Ron Courson and our staff members. That has been a big part of our support and our process.

“I am going to open it up with updates on some injuries, and I am sure you guys have a million questions about everything going on. I do not want to hinder your questions, but I do want to kind of update some guys on some people. I’ll start with Dom [Dominck Blaylock]. He is not completely cleared to practice or play. He is going to have a black shirt on. He is working out. He is coming off his ACL that occurred in the SEC Championship game, so he is not completely cleared yet, but he has worked really hard. He has been able to do some straight-line running and some workout stuff.

“The next guy we will talk about is DJ Daniel. He has missed some time due to an ankle injury. He is almost back, but this small summer access window we have had where we were able to have a little more time than we normally do — he was not able to do much during that time. So, I would not say he is behind, because he is a kid who played a lot of snaps last year, but he will be back with us kind of full time starting tomorrow.

UGA Football: Kirby Smart Gives Injury Update for the Start of Fall Camp

“I am going to open it up with updates on some injuries, and I am sure you guys have a million questions about everything going on. I do not want to hinder your questions, but I do want to kind of update some guys on some people. I’ll start with Dom [Dominck Blaylock]. He is not completely cleared to practice or play. So, I would not say he is behind, because he is a kid who played a lot of snaps last year, but he will be back with us kind of full time starting tomorrow.

“JT Daniels is not cleared yet. JT Daniels is coming off an ACL surgery as well. He has been able to take some reps, he has been able to throw the ball and do some things, but he is not completely cleared from the knee yet. He will still be in a brace for that. Broderick Jones had an injury — non-football injury — he has recovered from that and he’s back out taking snaps, taking reps, and has been with us working. Jamie Newman had a mid-foot sprain and was out for a little bit of our summer access period, we are calling it a mini-camp, whatever OTAs, whatever you want to reference it as. He missed probably half of that, not able to work out and do some things, but he was mentally there and able to do a lot of things with the team. He is back now and able to do everything.

“Monty [Rice] has been out a little bit with a little foot injury, but he has taken a lot of reps and played a bunch. Darnell Washington had a small scope in his knee. It was from an injury in high school that he is back out there and recovered from and practicing, doing everything. Rian Davis had a small torn meniscus. He should be back soon, but he is not able to practice right now. Kelee Ringo, as a lot of you were aware, he had an old injury from high school that we were trying to see if he could go with. The injury did not occur here, but he’s had a shoulder repair, and he is going to be out for a while. Then, Arian Smith had a meniscus repair and should be back sometime during the season but not sure exactly what date yet.

“So, if there is somebody else I am missing, feel free to ask. With that, I will open it up for questions from you guys.”
