UGA Football: Cine Named Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Semifinalist

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia junior safety Lewis Cine has been named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2021 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award given to the best defensive back in college football, according to an announcement by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

Cine, a native of Cedar Hill, Texas, is one of two semifinalists from the Southeastern Conference.  Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 23.

Junior Tykee Smith was a 2020 semifinalist with West Virginia before joining the Bulldogs in the offseason.  The Bulldogs’ last finalist was J.R. Reed in 2019 and the Georgia’s only winner of the award was Deandre Baker in 2018.

Cine has started all seven games for the undefeated Bulldogs and is third on the team with 28 tackles, including a tackle for loss.  He also has one interception this year and has helped Georgia boast the nation’s No. 2 pass defense, giving up just 144.9 yards per game.  Cine is on the backend of a defensive unit that is leading the country in scoring defense (6.6 points/game) and that has only allowed three opponents to reach double figures.

No. 1 Georgia (7-0, 4-0 SEC) travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for the annual showdown with Florida (4-3, 2-3) on Saturday.  CBS will televise the game at 3:30 p.m.

UGA Football: Dawg’s Defense Continues to Shine

The Georgia defense gave a bit at the end, on the last play from scrimmage inside Sanford Stadium on Saturday night. Of course, by then, with the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs fully in command against No. 11 Kentucky, the 1-yard touchdown at the very end didn’t really matter in a 30-13 victory in a matchup of the final two unbeaten teams in the SEC.

Just don’t tell this tough, dominating and determined defense that the Wildcats’ 1-yard score with 4 seconds left didn’t matter.

“Honestly, we treat that like anything. Even if there are 4 seconds left in the fourth quarter, we still do not want anyone in our end zone. Honestly, it still hurts right now,” linebacker Adam Anderson said about 30 minutes after Kentucky’s late touchdown.

ATHENS, Ga. — The top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs got strong performances from their offense and defense and dispatched No. 11 Kentucky, 30-13, in a matchup of unbeatens Saturday afternoon in a packed and noisy Sanford Stadium.

Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV, making his fourth start in seven games this season, was solid leading the offense, the ground game moved the ball, and the defense made the Wildcats work for every inch of ground they gained.

Another Dominating Day For The Defense: Top-ranked Georgia (7-0, 5-0 SEC) came in leading the nation in Scoring Defense and now have allowed only 46 points through seven games, the lowest total in that span since 1971 (also 46). #11 UK added its second TD with four seconds left in the contest for a 30-13 final. UK was only the second team to score a TD in the red zone this season. The first came in the first half and capped a 75-yard drive in 14 plays that took 6:42. The second Red Zone possession ended with a blocked field goal by Jordan Davis and Devonte Wyatt. The third Red Zone trip resulted in a TD with four seconds left, ending a 22 play, 75-yard drive in 11:23.

The leading tackler was senior Quay Walker with a career-high nine. Meanwhile sophomore Jalen Carter had  a career-high six tackles, 2.5 TFL and a sack. Travon Walker and Adam Anderson each picked up a half sack as Anderson has a team-leading 4.5 sacks while Walker has 2.5. Series History Vs. Kentucky

Top-ranked Georgia leads the Kentucky series 60-12-2 and is on a 11-game winning streak. This is the Dogs’ longest winning streak in the series after twice having 10-game win streaks. Kentucky’s last win in the Georgia series came in 2009 in Athens when it stormed back from a 20-6 halftime deficit for a 34-27 win. It was UK’s first win in Athens in 32 years. The No. 11 Wildcats have started this season 6-0 for the first time since 1950.

We’re Coming To Your City . . . Again

This will mark the second time ESPN College GameDay will be in Athens in the last three weeks. GameDay came on Oct. 2 when the Dogs topped No. 8 Arkansas 37-0. Prior to this Saturday’s matchup, Georgia has won two straight top-10 showdowns at home with GameDay on site after also blasting No. 7 Auburn 27-6 in 2020. GameDay was also in Charlotte for the top-five matchup against No. 3 Clemson in Georgia’s 2021 season opener. Counting this weekend, GameDay will have only visited the same location twice during the regular season within a three-week period two times (Alabama, 2014). This marks the seventh time that GameDay has come to Athens.

SEC Nation will also be visiting Athens this weekend. This is only the third time that SEC Nation and GameDay have been at the same site in history, including the 2018 Georgia-Florida showdown that the Bulldogs won 34-17.

Dominating Defense & Offense Delivering Points

Georgia leads the nation in Scoring Defense giving up just 5.5 points per game. The Bulldogs are averaging 39.8 points/game. Last week, they scored 34 points in the road win over No. 18 Auburn, as the Tigers were allowing just 16.2 p/g.
