Georgia Clinches Fourth SEC Eastern Division Title In Five Years

The Bulldogs clinched a spot in the 2021 SEC Championship Game with their 34-7 win over Florida and teamed with Kentucky’s 31-17 loss at Mississippi State over the weekend. Georgia tied the record for the earliest (Oct. 30) in league history to clinch, joining Auburn (2004) and Alabama (1993). This will mark the Bulldogs’ fourth trip to the SECCG in the last five years (2017-19) during Kirby Smart‘s sixth year as head coach. Georgia will make its ninth appearance in the SECCG where the Dogs are 3-5, winning titles in 2002, 2005 and 2017.

Dogs Atop The Polls

For the fourth straight week, Georgia is ranked No. 1 in the AP/Coaches polls. This marks the first time since the 2008 preseason that the Bulldogs have carried the top ranking in both polls. During the 1982 regular season, the Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 for five straight weeks.

The last time Georgia was No. 1 in the College Football Playoff poll was for two weeks during the 2017 season (Oct. 31, Nov. 7). The first 2021 CFP ranking will be released on Tuesday.

Georgia-Missouri Series History

The Bulldogs hold a 9-1 edge in the series history with Missouri. The first meeting came in the 1960 Orange Bowl in Miami, and the Bulldogs posted a 14-0 victory to cap a 10-1 season under coach Wallace Butts. The Bulldogs have faced the Tigers just 10 times because they did not play again until Missouri joined the SEC in 2012. That year, the Tigers played host to Georgia in their first-ever SEC contest.

UGA Football: 50 Years Of ‘Whaddaya got, Loran?’

With a voice as smooth and comforting as a glass of iced tea — sweet, of course — Loran Smith has been talking to us for decades. He’s given us updates from the sideline at Sanford Stadium, he’s provided context, depth and nuance during pregame and postgame shows, and through it all he’s been a storyteller and interviewer with grace and charm.

Whenever you’re listening to Smith on the radio, it feels like you should be sitting on your front-porch swing, that glass of tea sweating on the table beside you, with a loving and loyal dog resting at your feet.

“My first and foremost objective,” in getting involved in radio back in the late 1960s, Smith said, “was to promote Georgia. And No. 2, to enjoy a nice experience.”

It’s safe to say after all these years that Smith has achieved those objectives many, many times over. This 2021 Georgia football season is Smith’s 50th as a member of the Bulldog broadcast team. Yes, he was doing this long before head coach Kirby Smart, 45, was born.

UGA Football: Nakobe Dean Named Wuerffel Trophy Semifinalist

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia junior linebacker Nakobe Dean has been named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy, which is known as “college football’s premier award for community service.”

Dean, a native of Horn Lake, Miss., is one of three semifinalists from the Southeastern Conference.  Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 23 and the winner is scheduled to be announced on Dec. 9 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

Former Bulldog All-American and current Indianapolis Colt Rodrigo Blankenship was a semifinalist for the honor in 2019 while Jeb Blazevich was a 2016 Wuerffel Trophy semifinalist.  Former Georgia receiver and current Houston Texan Chris Conley (2014), Aaron Murray (2012) and Drew Butler (2011) were all finalists for the award.

Dean, who has a 3.53 in his Mechanical Engineering major, has been named to the 2021 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his dedication to the community.  Among other volunteer activities, Dean has helped with “Dawgs for Pups,” been a visitor at Camp Sunshine, given his time to Extra Special People (ESP) during the “Bulldogs and Buddies” practice visitation and participated in the Read Across America at local schools.

On the field, Dean is the second-leading tackler for the Bulldogs this season with 37 stops, including five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, and has two interceptions, including one pick he took back 50 yards for a touchdown versus Florida.  He has already been named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award and the Bednarik Award.

The No. 1 Bulldogs (8-0, 6-0 SEC) play host to Missouri (4-4, 1-3) on Saturday.  ESPN will televise the matchup at noon.

UGA Football: Kelee Ringo Talks Georgia Football

By John Frierson
Staff Writer

Kelee Ringo has one of the best pictures a Georgia football player can have.

The redshirt freshman defensive back is on the field with his mom, Tralee Hale, after the Bulldogs’ win over Kentucky, both of them wearing big smiles. More significantly, Hale is dressed head-to-toe in pink, including her hair, and is wearing pink Spike Squad shoulder pads.

Diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago, Hale spent the Kentucky game cheering with the Spike Squad and the UGA Paint Line, which had “TRALEE STRONG” spelled out on their backs, the letters in black and the skin painted pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Ringo, from Tacoma, Wash., though he went to high school in Scottsdale, Ariz., has started the past five games and his five pass breakups are tied for the team lead. During a Quick Chat after practice Tuesday, he talked about seeing his mom with the Spike Squad, his days as an elite junior sprinter (10.43 seconds in the 100 meters), Halloween, and much more.

Here’s some of what he had to say:

UGA Football: Frierson Chats With Christopher Smith

By John Frierson
Staff Writer

Christopher Smith forever earned a place in Georgia football lore in the Bulldogs’ season-opening win over Clemson. His 74-yard interception return for a touchdown in Georgia’s 10-3 victory was the defensive duel’s only TD. It was also the senior from Atlanta’s first career interception.

Smith broke into the starting lineup midway through the 2020 season and has been making big plays ever since. As the top-ranked Bulldogs, who have already clinched the SEC East title and a spot in the SEC Championship Game, prepare to take on Missouri on Saturday, Smith talked about the interception, how the team is staying focused, his favorite Halloween candy, and much more.

Here’s some of what he had to say:

Frierson: Do people still come up to you and want to about the interception and touchdown against Clemson?

Smith: It’s died down a little bit since it first happened, when that was all I was hearing about. People still come up to me and talk about it, and I’m always happy to have a conversation about anything like that. It was a great play and it definitely helped propel our season, so it was great to be able to be a part of that.

Dogs Atop The Polls

For the third straight week, Georgia is ranked No. 31, Nov. 7). The first 2021 CFP ranking will be released on Nov. 2.

Series History Vs. Florida

This is the first time since 2017 that Georgia-Florida will not be a top-10 matchup. The Bulldogs went 2-1 in that stretch. In the all-time series, Georgia holds a 53-44-2 advantage including 46-42-1 in Jacksonville. The annual rivalry will stay in Jacksonville until at least 2023. Florida has the series 52-44-2 in favor of Georgia because it does not count the Dogs’ 52-0 victory in 1904 that was played in Macon. Bulldog coach Kirby Smart is 3-2 against the Gators.

Dominating Defense & Offense Delivering Points

Georgia leads the nation in Scoring Defense giving up just 6.6 points per game. The Bulldogs are averaging 38.4 points/game, which is ranked 13th nationally. Georgia is 4-0 versus ranked teams, including a pair of top-10 wins.

The defense has allowed just four touchdowns. The first came in the fourth quarter versus USC with the Bulldogs leading 40-6. The second came at No. 18 AU with Georgia leading 24-3. UAB’s touchdown came on a pick-six. Most recently, No. 11 Kentucky had two scores, including the final one with :04 left.

Georgia leads the SEC and ranks fifth nationally in Red Zone defense. Opponents have advanced to the Red Zone only 11 times this season resulting in three touchdowns, four field goals and four times coming away with no points.

Georgia opponents have scored just 46 points in 2021. That seven-game tally is the lowest since 1971 when the Bulldogs had allowed the same total through seven contests.

The Bulldogs lead the country in Total Defense, giving up just 208.4 yards/game. In their last game, the Bulldogs held No. 11 Kentucky to 243 yards, including just 51 on the ground. The Wildcats came in averaging 214 yards rushing, including the SEC rushing leader in Chris Rodriguez Jr., who was held to seven yards on seven carries.

On The Mend

The open date provided another week for numerous Bulldogs who have missed time this year to get healthier. QB JT Daniels has not played since the Vanderbilt game on Sept. 26. Defensive backs Christopher Smith (missed last game) and Ameer Speed (missed last two games), running back Kenny McIntosh (missed last game) and receivers Arian Smith (missed last five games), Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint (missed the Arkansas/Auburn games, played sparingly versus Kentucky) and Jermaine Burton (missed the Auburn game, played sparingly versus Kentucky) have missed time while veteran receivers George Pickens and Dominick Blaylock have yet to play this year.

2020 Flashback

Georgia built an early 14-0 lead including Zamir White scampering 75 yards for a TD on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Then, the Gators used an aerial assault by Kyle Trask and a 24-point outburst in the second quarter to build a 38-21 advantage by halftime. Georgia was missing three defensive starters due to injury (NT Jordan Davis, DT Julian Rochester, S Richard LeCounte) and then starting FS Lewis Cine was ejected for targeting in the second quarter. Trask’s 474 passing yards ranked as the second most ever by a Bulldog opponent, trailing only Jared Lorenzen of Kentucky (528, 2000). Overall, Florida ran 80 plays and finished with 571 yards of total offense. The Gator running backs combined for 10 receptions and 212 receiving yards. The second half featured a Georgia score while Florida was limited to two field goals for a 44-28 final.

GA-FLA Hall Of Fame

Former Bulldog linebacker Thomas Davis (2002-04 UGA, 2005-20 NFL) and offensive lineman Jon Stinchcomb (1999-02 UGA, 2003-10 NFL) will be inducted into the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame during ceremonies and a luncheon on Friday as part of the Georgia-Florida Weekend.
