UGA Football: No. 1 Georgia Postgame Notes vs. Charleston Southern

Going 11-0: With today’s 56-7 victory, top-ranked Georgia improves to 11-0 for the first time since 1982 when it finished the regular season 11-0. Also, the 1980 consensus national champion Bulldogs finished 11-0 during the regular season and then won the Sugar Bowl to cap a 12-0 run. The 1946 Bulldogs posted an 11-0 mark after going 10-0 in the regular season and then claiming the Sugar Bowl. There have been nine other teams to register at least 11 wins in a season in school history (1942; 1971; 2002; 2003; 2007; 2012; 2017; 2018 and 2019).

Georgia owns the nation’s longest active winning streak in the FBS as it improves to 15 games. This is tied for second longest in school history as the Bulldogs also won 15 straight contests from 1941-42 and 1979-81. The school record is 17 games set during a three-year stretch from 1945-47.

Dogs Atop The Polls

For the sixth straight week, Georgia is the unanimous No. 1 team in the AP and Coaches polls. This matches the longest stretch at No. 1 since 1980. Currently, Georgia is ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff poll. Before this season, the last time Georgia was No. 1 in the CFP poll was for two weeks during the 2017 season (Oct. 31, Nov. 7). The third 2021 CFP ranking will be released on Tuesday. Georgia is 4-0 versus ranked teams, including a pair of top-10 wins.

Georgia-Charleston Southern Series History

The Bulldogs and Buccaneers have met only once and that came in 2014. Six different Georgia players scored as UGA topped Charleston Southern 55-9. Former Georgia receiver and current Houston Texan Chris Conley hauled in two touchdown passes from Hutson Mason and former Bulldog running back and current Cleveland Brown Nick Chubb had two scoring runs, including an 83-yard scamper. While the Buccaneers tallied 190 yards on the ground and won the turnover battle two to one, they only managed 21 through the air. Meanwhile, Georgia piled up 580 yards and was never forced to punt.

Dominating Defense & Offense Delivering Points

Georgia leads the nation in Scoring Defense giving up just 7.6 points per game. The Bulldogs are averaging 38.7 points per game, which is ranked 11th nationally.

The Bulldogs have only trailed four times this year. The first time was at No. 18 Auburn when the Tigers kicked a field goal in the first quarter. Georgia trailed in that game for 5:29. Following the Tigers’ score, the Bulldogs reeled off 24 straight points. The second instance happened in the first quarter against Missouri following a field goal. The Bulldogs trailed for 5:08 in that contest. Georgia then went on a 40-0 run. At UT, Georgia fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter for 2:33 before tying the game. The Volunteers reclaimed a 10-7 advantage later in the quarter and led for another 7:07. Georgia responded by scoring 34 unanswered points in an eventual 41-17 victory.

The defense has allowed just seven touchdowns while the unit has scored three touchdowns. The defense did not allow a touchdown until the third game of the season and that came in the fourth quarter versus USC with the Bulldogs leading 40-6. The second came at No. 18 AU with Georgia leading 24-3. No. 11 Kentucky had two scores, including the final one with :04 left. Florida scored with 2:49 left in the game with Georgia leading 27-0. UT managed a first quarter TD and built a 10-7 lead before Georgia stormed back. By the way, UAB’s touchdown came on a pick-six.

UGA Football: Jordan Davis Tabbed Outland Trophy Semifinalist

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia senior lineman Jordan Davis has been named one of six semifinalists for the 2021 Outland Trophy, given annually to the nation’s top interior lineman by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

Davis, a native of Charlotte, N.C., joins two other players from the Southeastern Conference on the list.

These six semifinalists will be pared to three finalists on Nov. 23 and the recipient of the 2021 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on ESPN on Dec. 9.  The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 12, 2022.

Davis has helped Georgia lead the nation in scoring defense (7.6 points/game), rank second nationally in rushing defense (78.2 yards/game) and total defense (247.0 ypg).  He anchors the interior line with 23 tackles and 3.5 sacks.  Opponents have scored just 76 points on the Bulldogs, and no team has registered more than 17 points.

Former Bulldog and College Football Hall of Fame lineman Bill Stanfill has been Georgia’s only winner of the Outland Trophy in 1968.  While Georgia has not had any other finalists, former Bulldog All-American and current New York Giant lineman Andrew Thomas was a semifinalist in 2019.

Also, Davis is also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and for the Chuck Bednarik Award.  In addition, he is a finalist for the Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award. UGA Football: Jordan Davis Named Nagurski Trophy Finalist

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia senior lineman Jordan Davis has been named one of three finalists for the 2021 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given annually to the nation’s top defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Reed in 2019 and linebacker Roquan Smith in 2017. Also, linebacker Justin Houston (2010) and lineman David Pollack (2002 & 2004) were finalists.

UGA Football: Coach Smart, Bulldogs Prepare for Buccaneers

ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart, along with a pair of players previewed Saturday’s home matchup against Charleston Southern. The Bulldogs and the Buccaneers kick off at 12 p.m. ET in Athens, Ga.

On Wednesday, Coach Smart, Xavier Truss and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint offered the following comments.

“We’re going to have somewhere between 28 and 30, it’s gotten narrowed down to about that point in terms of guys who decided if they are going to walk or not. Yes, Stetson (Bennett) will be one of them. I think out of them there are about 16-17 that have remaining eligibility and are considering that eligibility. It wouldn’t be the first year of doing it had we not had the cancelation last year. Last year, we had it all set up for Devonte (Wyatt) and (Justin) Shaffer. A lot of those guys were walking last year, they came back and played and have been a major part of our success.”
