UGA Football: CFP Semifinal Features Georgia and Ohio State in Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

ATHENS — The top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs are in the College Football Playoff for the second consecutive year and will play fourth-ranked Ohio State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl semi-final game on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022.

The semifinal game will be played in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium between the  Bulldogs and Buckeyes.  Georgia and Ohio State have met only once with the Bulldogs coming out on top in the 1993 Citrus Bowl, 21-14.

“On behalf of our team and especially our seniors we are delighted to be selected for the College Football Playoff and the opportunity to play close to home in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl,” said UGA head coach Kirby Smart.  “To be one of the four teams in the Playoff is a goal for every team, coach, player, and fan.  We are honored and I’m so proud of our team.  And playing close to home presents a great opportunity for our fans who have been so supportive of our team throughout the season at home and on the road.  At the same time it’s also a challenge to play at team like Ohio State which has proven to be one of college football’s most storied and accomplished programs.”

The other CFP semi-final game will feature second-ranked Michigan vs. third-ranked TCU in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.  The winners of the two semi-finals will meet for the national championship on Monday, Jan. 9 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

“The selection of our team to represent the University of Georgia and the Southeastern Conference is an honor only a handful of teams are fortunate to experience,” said UGA J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Josh Brooks. “It’s a testament to all the time, energy and hard work on the part of our entire organization.  I know our coaches, staff, players, and fans will have an incredible opportunity that will provide another memorable experience.”

Georgia has appeared in the Chick-fil-A Bowl six times: Dec. 28, 1973 (Georgia 17, Maryland 16); Dec. 30, 1989 (Syracuse 19, Georgia 18); Dec. 30, 1995 (Virginia 34, Georgia 27); Dec. 31, 1998 (Georgia 35, Virginia 33); Dec. 30, 2006 (Georgia 31, Virginia Tech 24); Jan. 1, 2021 (Georgia 24, Cincinnati 21).

This will be Georgia’s 60th bowl game appearance— second most of any team in the country. The Bulldogs’ all-time bowl record is 35-21-3. Georgia is making its 26th consecutive bowl appearance, which ranks as the longest active streak in the country.

Georgia’s senior class is 47-5 with four New Year’s Six bowl appearances (3-0), the 2022 SEC championship, three SEC Eastern Division titles (2019-21-22), and two College Football Playoff appearances (2021, ’22) including the January, 2022 national title.

On offense, defense and special teams, the Bulldogs (13-0) delivered en route to the program’s first SEC title since 2017. Georgia’s offense produced a gaudy 529 yards and went 5-for-5 in the red zone.
