UGA Recruiting: Official Visitors Preview for June 10th Weekend
Round 2 Set to Begin. Last week was one of the biggest, if not the biggest recruiting weekend ever for UGA. One thing I was told: if we get who we think we’re getting from last weekend, we just won ourselves another national championship. While this weekend won’t be as star studded (how can it be with Arch Manning headlining last weekend), it will still be loaded with talent.
The first weekend in June brought 13 official visitors to Athens, and the Dawgs follow it up with 10 this weekend. There are a couple of guys you could argue are the biggest names, but many recruiting fans’ favorite is Jamaal Jarrett. Georgia is in a great spot here, even after he’s already taken officials to UNC and Auburn. I’ve heard that Auburn might be the biggest competition right now instead of UNC. Of course you have to watch Texas A&M as well. Another note: he and Sydir Mitchell have become close and want to play together at the next level.
The highest ranked prospect set to visit this weekend is Joenel Aguero. He just released his top 4 and announced a decision date of July 23rd. I was surprised to see LSU out of the running. I’ve felt very good about our chances here for a while, but you can’t totally count out Ohio State. With the way things go, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see UGA and Ohio State split Aguero and Downs.
One of my favorite receivers in this class is Tyler Williams. I do believe UGA has been in the lead behind the scenes. He just visited Clemson and Texas A&M gets him in town later this month. I still very much like the Dawgs chances here.
Troy Bowles is also a very important target. He hasn’t said much about his recruitment overall, but UGA has been a factor for a while. This is another that could come down to the Dawgs and Buckeyes. These officials will be very important here.
Anthony Evans is one of the speedsters in this class that UGA is targeting. He was previously committed to Arkansas, but de-committed shortly after a visit to Athens. He just took his OV to Oklahoma and the Sooners are probably the biggest competition here for the Texas receiver.
One recruit that UGA has been quietly surging with is in-state Carver-Columbus offensive lineman Kelton Smith. Steve Wiltfong at 247sports actually put in a crystal ball pick for him today. If UGA keeps Hughley and McElderry (see below), we could add Smith and Shanahan and call it a day.
That is, unless Shamurad Umarov wants to be a part of this class. UGA didn’t seem to be recruiting the in-state offensive lineman very hard until the hiring of Coach Searels. He was just at Michigan State and has a couple of visits after UGA.
This weekend will be a very important visit for Ryqueze McElderry. Georgia was in early on the Alabama offensive lineman. Alabama offered later and he took a couple of visits there. He was on his official to Auburn last weekend and the Tigers are trying to make a move. It’s always been hard to get these kids out of Alabama but if anyone can do it, it’s Kirby Smart and UGA. I do believe he sticks to his commitment in the end as long as UGA wants him to. I also believe we want him to.
UGA offered Grayson Howard in March and he was in Athens at the end of May. He’s high on Florida and South Carolina, who have more established relationships. Howard is a big boy at 6’3 225, but can move. If I’m Glenn Schumann, my top targets are CJ Allen, Raylen Wilson, and Troy Bowles. But Howard wouldn’t be far behind.
I’ll continue to say that I’ll shoot straight with you if I don’t know something. Well, I don’t know much at all about Stephiylan Green as far as his recruitment goes. Watch his film and you’ll see that he can obviously play. You have to think being from Rome, GA that UGA will be hard to beat if we really go after him hard.
Of course we’ll be set up all weekend to bring you up to the minute information on these visits. Let’s see how much this group likes the white jerseys!
